Metro to come up with elevated train depots

This will enable better space management.

May 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

To tackle space constraint, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is setting up elevated depots for parking trains that would be operational on the upcoming corridors under Phase-III.

Two of Delhi Metro’s upcoming depots will have many of their major components constructed on elevated decks for better space management, officials said. All the existing eight metro depots have been constructed at grade level.

A metro train depot generally requires about 2.5 lakh square metres space for the setting up of stabling lines, inspection bays, workshops, washing plants, etc. However, for both the upcoming Vinod Nagar and Kalindi Kunj depots, the space available was limited and inadequate.

Therefore, a decision was taken to construct their vital components on elevated decks for better utilisation of the space, an official said.

Stabling lines

For the Kalindi Kunj depot, a 1.3-kilometre long and 30-40 metre wide deck for stabling lines is being constructed at Jasola Vihar near Kalindi Kunj on an elevated deck about 13 to 14 metres from the ground, where the trains operating on this section would be stabled.

“In the main depot area at Kalindi Kunj, the auto washing plant, for the cleaning of the trains, would also be set up at on an elevated deck for effective space management. A similar facility had earlier been set up at the Sultanpur depot in Phase-II due to space constraints,” a metro spokesperson said.

This facility will be able to accommodate 27 trains and the inspection bay would be able to hold six to eight trains at a time.

In addition, another elevated deck for stabling additional trains in the future is also being planned.

The depot at Vinod Nagar for the Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor has a drain and a road in between the allotted area and the site is fragmented into two parts.

“One side of the site is at the ground level and can accommodate 11 stabling lines without any roofing. The other side comprises a double deck structure to cater to 20 stabling lines.

Out of the 20 lines, nine lines will be at ground level and 11 lines would be on the deck.

In addition, four lines will be for the inspection bay and two lines will be dedicated to the workshop,” a spokesperson said.

Both the depots will have depot control centres, effluent treatment plants, sewage treatment plants, inspection bays, workshops, auto train washing plants, etc.

The construction work for both the depots has been started.

The Delhi Metro is constructing six new depots at Kalindi Kunj, Mukundpur, Vinod Nagar Badli, Ghaziabad and Faridabad, in the present phase of construction to meet the requirements of the new trains which are under procurement.

At present, the DMRC has eight depots for its existing corridors at Shastri Park, Khyber Pass, Najafgarh (Phase-1), Yamuna Bank, Mundka, Sarita Vihar, Sultanpur and Dwarka Sector 21 (Phase-II).

For both Vinod Nagar & Kalindi Kunj depots, the space available was inadequate. So a decision was taken to construct their vital components on elevated decks.
