May pass more orders to check dengue, says HC

: The Delhi High Court has said it may pass additional directions to its previous orders for combating diseases like dengue and malaria, if needed. The earlier orders were passed while disposing of a writ petition seeking implementation of measures to curb vector-borne diseases.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath said this while reserving its orders on a plea by petitioner Arpit Bhargava, who sought directions to the Delhi government to take steps to combat dengue. Mr. Bhargava also contended that dengue patients were still not being admitted to hospitals.

Countering the petitioner's contention, Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra said a toll-free helpline for dengue patients had been started and the number of beds in hospitals had also been increased.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had earlier told the High Court that it had released about Rs.60 crore to the three Municipal Corporations under various sanitation schemes to combat the threat of dengue and other vector-borne diseases.

However, the petitioner pointed out that the funds had been released only after 23 people, including some children, died of dengue and alleged that the Delhi government had taken belated steps to control the disease.
