A man was killed and 12 persons were injured in communal clashes at Bheetar in the Ghatampur area, 60 km from Kanpur, on Sunday. The clashes broke out over a dispute over an alleged theft in the house of a member of one community.

Official sources in Lucknow said 12 persons have been rounded up by the police in connection with the clashes. A rumour that two youths from a community, who allegedly burgled the house of person from another community, were killed led to arson and other incidents.
Ejaz, 33, who owned a battery shop in the village, sustained injuries in the clashes and died in a hospital, sources said.
The injured have been admitted to hospital in Kanpur, where a woman who suffered severe burns is said to be in a critical state.
The village has Hindu and Muslim families. The police detained the alleged burglars at the Ghatampur police station, but the village pradhan managed to secure their release on Sunday.The situation was brought under control by heavy police deployment, but not before six personnel were injured in stone-throwing.
