Lyricist Nizam dies at 62

The mortal remains of evergreen Odia romantic lyricist Md. Nizam was laid to rest at Qadam-e-Rasool here on Monday afternoon where hundreds of his fans, friends, relatives and film-makers bade a tearful farewell to the multifaceted personality.

Nizam (62) breathed his last at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar this morning after a protracted illness.

The body was brought to his residence at Durghabazar here, where eminent persons of the city, including cine stars, paid their last respects to the departed soul.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and leaders cutting across party lines also paid rich tributes to the lyricist and writer, who would be remembered for long for his popular romantic and joyful lyrics.

Beginning his career as an All India Radio artiste, Nizam switched over to Odia films in 1977 and soon created a niche for himself.

“His lyrics had the right mellowness and his creative marvels had the touch of Urdu kalams in it,” says eminent Odia music director Swarup Naik. Like his agility in a football field, Nizam’s lyrics were lively too, Naik said expressing his deep condolence.
