‘Take back K.P.S. Gill’s Padma Shri award’

The Centre’s decision to strip police officers convicted of ‘moral turpitude’ of medals and awards has fuelled a demand from a former woman IAS officer that the former Punjab Director General of Police, K.P.S. Gill, who was convicted of molesting her, be stripped of his Padma Shri award.

“How can the country have a convicted Padma Shri,” asked the ex-IAS officer on Tuesday. “There are clear instructions from the Government of India that bars the authorities from recommending names of persons involved in any sort of controversy. And this man has been convicted by courts and it is stated on record that ‘he has the habit of misbehaving with women.’ Still his name was nominated.”

She demanded that action be taken against Mr. Gill in the same manner as in the case of the former Haryana DGP, S.P.S. Rathore, who stands to lose his medal following his conviction in the molestation case.

“Gill’s case is also one of moral turpitude. All his medals and the Padma Shri should be taken away,” said the official, who is currently an Information Commissioner in Punjab. “Fifteen days before the Padma Shri was conferred, all the cases against him were quashed, even though all courts held him guilty of misbehaving with me in 1988,” she added.
