The electoral alliance between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal is intact, and what form it will take in the coming civic polls across the State will be determined at the district levels, Pranab Mukherjee, Union Finance Minister and president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC), said here on Sunday.
“Municipal polls are unlike Assembly and Lok Sabha elections that are fought on the basis of general issues. The situation in one district could be different from another,” Mr. Mukherjee said while explaining the decision to formalise the electoral pact at the district level after a meeting with the party's State leaders and several of its district committee presidents.
The issue of the Congress leaderships in certain districts appearing to have encountered obstacles on issues related to electoral adjustments with the Trinamool was raised at the meeting.
“In some places decisions on the alliance have been taken. But in others it is not so as yet, though we hope that the necessary decisions will be taken soon,” he said.
The presidents of the district committees have been given the task of forging alliances with the Trinamool in their respective districts.
