Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for more than eight hours in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam at the agency’s office in Shillong on Tuesday.

Mr. Kumar arrived at the CBI office in the hill town’s Oakland locality in a convoy escorted by the Meghalaya police at 10.45 a.m. He left the office at 7.25 p.m. after what his lawyer Biswajeet Deb termed “sharing of information”.

Mr. Deb told newspersons that he was not privy to what transpired in the questioning room as he and two other West Bengal police officers — Kolkata Additional Commissioner of Police Jawed Samim and Deputy Commissioner (Special Task Force) Murlidhar Sharma — who accompanied Mr. Kumar to Shillong, were made to wait in a separate room.

Not an accused: lawyer

The trio kept moving in and out of the CBI office situated on a narrow lane, heavily guarded by State police commandos.

“He (Mr. Kumar) is not being interrogated as he is not an accused (in the Saradha case) but a witness. He is here to share information. He has cooperated earlier, and he is cooperating now after the Supreme Court order,” Mr. Deb said after the questioning ended.

The interrogation is being headed by a 10-member team of CBI officials who came from Delhi, Lucknow and Bhopal. A couple of CBI officers, including the investigating officer of the case, came from Kolkata.

A CBI officer, declining to be quoted, said Mr. Kumar would be questioned again on Sunday along with Kunal Ghosh, a journalist-turned-politician and Trinamool Congress MP in the Rajya Sabha.
