May 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - LUCKNOW:

Nearly 28 years after the infamous Hashimpura massacre and the Maliana communal riots in Meerut in April-May 1987, the Samajwadi Party Government announced a financial help of Rs. 5 lakh each to the affected families. The financial help was announced by the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, on Wednesday.

An official spokesman confirmed the Government’s decision to file an appeal in the Delhi High Court against the Hashimpura verdict.

The compensation was announced shortly after another delegation comprising the family members of the Hashimpura and Maliana victims met the Samajwadi Party president, Mulayam Singh, here. A separate delegation had met the Samajwadi Party chief on Tuesday. Both the delegations were led by the party MLC, Ashu Malik.

Assuring the delegation that justice would be delivered to them, Mr. Singh said an appeal would be filed in the Delhi High Court against the Delhi court’s order of March 21, 2015, in the Hashimpura case. The SP president said he considered humanity as the biggest religion and injustice would never be allowed to the poor and the deprived persons.

In a charter of demands submitted to Mr. Singh the delegation demanded that the families of the 115 deceased (42 of Hashimpura and 73 others who died in the communal violence in Maliana) should be given a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each. The delegation demanded that the inquiry report of the Gyan Prakash Committee constituted to probe the killing of 42 Muslims of Hashimpura allegedly by 19 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel should be made public. It was also demanded that an appeal be filed against the Delhi court’s order in the Hashimpura case.

The delegation comprised of the State president of Jamiatul Ulema-i-Hind, Ashhad Rashidi, Maulana Riyaz Ahmed from Saharanpur and Maulana Badr from Kandhla.
