The 20-year-old man, who has been arrested for allegedly raping and brutalising a four-year-old girl in Kehsav Puram here last week, was seen offering eatables to other children in the area as well, said sources.

While Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Vijay Singh, on Monday confirmed the arrest of the accused Raju refusing to divulge further, it is learnt that during his custodial interrogation Raju has confessed to his crime. A source said that because Raju would often offer toffees other children of the area but had not targeted anyone thus far, he escaped suspicion initially.

“However, with eyewitness accounts and versions of the victim families pointing towards his role, he was detained but initially he tried to pin the blame on fellow detainees who were also narrowed down in the suspects' list and questioned. Later, however, he confessed to his crime,” said a source.

During investigations, police had also spoken to some persons in the area who had purportedly seen the accused taking the little girl with him after offering her chocolates.

Earlier, the grand father of the girl had also said that the accused lured the girl with toffees and took her to nearby bushes close to the slum area where the victim families live. He was the one who later spotted her with cuts on the lips, faces and private parts as well, injuries he suspected were inflicted using a razor blade. Other than injuries inflicted by a sharp object, doctors have also noticed several bite marks on her body. The girl’s grandfather had also blamed those running a liquor vend in the area for encouraging anti-social activities.
