Former Jawaharlal University Student Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar’s convoy was attacked on Tuesday night in a scuffle with members of a Dussehra puja organisation in Begusarai district of Bihar.

At least three persons were injured in the scuffle and FIRs were lodged in local police stations by both parties. The incident took place when Mr. Kumar was returning to Begusarai from addressing a public meeting Pethiagachhi in Mansoorpur block of the district.

When his convoy reached Bhagwanpur block he stopped to meet someone there near a two-wheeler agency.

Locals said his convoy of several vehicles caused inconvenience to the puja organisers on the road and when they protested, a scuffle broke out between them.

The local puja organisers pelted stones at vehicles at the convoy in which three people — Nishant, Sumit and Golu — received minor injuries. Windscreens of some vehicles too were broken.

Later, Mr. Kumar lodged a complaint at local Barauni police station while, the locals filed a counter FIR against Mr. Kumar and his supporters at Bhagwanpur police station.

“FIR has been lodged against Kanhaiya Kumar and his supporters…we’ll investigate the complaint and take action,” said Deepak Kumar, Station House Officer of Bhagwanpur police station.

“Kanhaiya Kumar and his supporters have also lodged an FIR against locals of Bhagwanpur area for assaulting them”, Barauni police station SHO Gajendra Singh said.

Earlier on Monday a complaint was also lodged against Mr. Kumar and his supporters at Phulwari Sharief police station in Patna for “misbehaving” with doctors at Patna based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Meanwhile, Mr. Kumar alleged that he was attacked by BJP and Bajrang Dal supporters when he was returning back after addressing a public meeting on Tuesday night.

“I was addressing public meeting to garner support of people in view of our party’s BJP Bhagao, Desh Bachao (Remove BJP, save country) rally at Patna on October 25…the BJP has got frightened with my popularity and orchestrating attack on me under a well thought of conspiracy,” Mr. Kumar told The Hindu over phone.
