JD(U) suspends party MLA for irregularities in appointments at BAU

The ruling Janata Dal (United) party on Thursday suspended party MLA Mewalal Choudhary after he was booked in a case of gross irregularity in the appointments of 161 assistant professors and junior scientists at the Bihar Agricultural University during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

“The party has suspended Mewalal Choudhary after a case has been lodged against him in the BRA appointments”, JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar told The Hindu .

“This is called good governance of Nitish Kumar”, he added promptly.

The party took action against Mr. Choudhary on the first day of budget session of the Bihar legislature began on Thursday.

Mewalal Choudhary is JD(U) MLA from Tarapur assembly constituency of Munger district. Earlier, he was the founder Vice-Chancellor of the Bihar Agriculture University (BRA) at Sabour in Bhagalpur and had served the University till 2015.

The BAU authorities had submitted a complaint against Mr. Choudhary for irregularities in the appointments of 161 assistant professors and junior scientists during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor in 2012.

Following the Chancellor’s approval, the probe committee formed to inquire into the irregularities had initiated a legal action against Mr. Choudhary and lodged a case against him at the local Sabour police station.

The probe committee was headed by Justice (retd) Syed Mohammed Mahfooz Alam of the Patna high court.

“Many appointments during his tenure were made by ignoring the candidates' performance in written test and academic records. Those selected were given high marks in interview and PowerPoint presentation (PPT) by the screening committee”, said member of the probe committee.

“A case against Mr. Choudhary has been lodged under sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B,” Niraj Tiwari, Officer-in-charge of the Sabour police station said.
