Anand Kumar, founder of the Super 30 coaching institute for the poor, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to open ‘smart schools,’ on the lines of smart cities, to foster real growth of the country.

“It is high time India started thinking about smart schools on the lines of smart cities,” he told The Hindu , lauding the government for its plan to build toilets in all schools.

There was lack of good teachers at every level of education in India. “In smart schools, the focus has to be on good teachers.

A school is as good as its teachers, not the kind of building it has or the gadgets it uses,” said Mr. Kumar, an eminent mathematician, who has been felicitated worldwide for his pioneering work in education for the poor.

“Not everyone one can become a teacher, but a teacher can certainly contribute to society in more ways than one,” he said, celebrating Teachers’ Day with students of his Ramanujam School of Mathematics and Super 30.

“I hope and believe our Prime Minister must listen to our request and do take some positive steps in the direction”, Mr Kumar said.
