India Inc. opposes Maratha quota in private sector

Maharashtra ordinance on reservation for Marathas, Muslims extends to private sector

The Maharashtra government’s ordinance extending reservation to Marathas and Muslims which also applies to the private sector has attracted strong criticism from India Inc.

The Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) will approach the State government with a demand to roll back its decision. “We will submit a memorandum against this ordinance,” said IMC president Prabodh Thakker.

Initially the quota was believed to apply to only government jobs and educational institutions. However, the ordinance clearly says that “all those industries or organisations which have received the State government’s help in the form of concessions on land prices or financial aid” will have to extend the reservation. It also says that those industries which have received approvals from the government or are being monitored by it will also have to extend the reservation.

The government has granted 16 per cent quota for Marathas and five per cent for Muslims.
