After almost a week of Durga Puja festivities, immersion of idols in Kolkata and other parts of the State started on ‘Bijoy Dashami’ here on Friday. Elaborate arrangements have been made at 16 ghats on the Hooghly for immersion, which will continue till October 23.

The West Bengal government has organised a grand carnival on Red Road on October 23 where about 75 big puja committees will participate.

For this year’s immersion, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has put nylon nets along the ghats in Kolkata, which will prevent idols from flowing into the river. Debasish Kumar, Member Mayor in Council, who is overseeing the immersion process, said that more than 300 personnel have been deployed along different ghats to extricate the structures of idols from the river.

Kolkata Mayor Sovon Chatterjee, who visited different ghats in the city, said that during the day idols of household pujas were brought for immersion.

Almost 3,000 community pujas were organised in Kolkata.
