Two days before he was found dead at his father’s official residence in Lucknow, Shailesh Yadav, son of Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav, had written to the Special Task Force (STF) investigating the Vyapam scam about the mental anguish he was experiencing from its statements in the press.

On March 23, Shailesh (50), one of the accused in the multi-crore scam, wrote to the STF saying he was being falsely accused of not cooperating with the investigation, when he had not received any official communication.

“I have been reading in the newspapers that I am accused of being involved in the Vyapam scam ... and that I am not cooperating with the probe,” Shailesh said in a letter to the Additional Director-General of STF.

“The fact is that till date I have not received any notice or communication from the STF... nor do I have any information about the said investigation being conducted against me,” he wrote adding that the information being published in the newspapers was causing him a lot of pain.

“The false information [being published] is making me face unnecessary defamation.”

He said his health had deteriorated from the mental anguish and harassment he was experiencing.

“I assure you that whenever I get any official communication in this regard, I will fully cooperate with the probe without any delay,” he wrote.

When contacted, his lawyer E.A. Qureshi said Shailesh was pained by the accusations against him in the press.

“He believed he was innocent and was being made a scapegoat,” Mr. Qureshi told The Hindu .

Shailesh was found dead in Lucknow last week. While family sources said he died of brain haemorrhage, the police have not officially established the cause of death. His name had consistently figured in the Vyapam scam investigations.
