IIT-Bhubaneswar to train students in Odissi too

The Indian Institute of Technology, known for producing world-class engineers, will produce classical Odissi dancers too. If the plan of the IIT-Bhubaneswar is successful, a student can come out of the institute with a formal certificate in Odissi, besides his B. Tech degree.

Bhubaneswar is among the few IITs nationwide to introduce dance as a breadth subject. The IIT-B seems serious about initiating students in Odissi, known for its classical nuances and intricate grammar.

The Odissi curriculum is being prepared. “We believe in holistic education. We should improve consolidation in core subjects, besides creating enough breadth in the curriculum. We have diverse breadth subjects, from sports to management and from yoga to entrepreneurship. Now, we have introduced Odissi as a breadth subject, which is selective,” IIT-Bhubaneswar Director R.V. Raja Kumar said here on Friday.

The institute has roped in Odissi dancers such as Padmashree Kumkum Mohanty, Padmashree Ileana Citaristi and Odissi Guru Ratikant Mohapatra to prepare the course that will have six basic subjects.

“In the first semester, a student will have to study the first two subjects. He or she will be assessed through a written test and stage performance. There will be 100 marks for the subject. It will be like an appreciation course,” says Dean of Academic Affairs N.C. Sahoo.

After the first year, a student may pursue dance. In the second and third years, he or she can sign up for another two subjects of the Odissi course. Training in two more subjects will help them earn a diploma certificate.

“We are preparing the course in such a way that a student can take up the subject seriously and train for a diploma,” says Professor Raja Kumar.

As of now, 10 girls have opted for Odissi as a breadth subject. Ironically, all of them are non-Odias. They are required to practise four-five hours a week.
