IIT professors held in bridge collapse case

September 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 04:13 pm IST - Dehradun:

Two professors from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, who were arrested on Sunday evening in connection with the collapse of an under-construction bridge and the consequent deaths, have been sent to judicial remand.

In March, 2012, an under-construction bridge over the river Alaknanda in Tehri district’s Kirti Nagar area collapsed, killing seven people.

Additional Superintendent of Police in the police headquarters, here, Mamta Vohra said that the two professors from IIT-Roorkee’s Civil Engineering Department were involved in the design of the bridge. Several enquiries were set-up after the bridge collapse, which raised questions on the bridge’s design and construction.

“Several committees were set-up to look into the collapse of the bride [called the Chauras bridge]. The reports of the committees raised questions on the material used in the construction of the bridge, and on its design,” Ms. Vohra, who is investigating officer for the case, said.

The two professors were arrested on Sunday evening and brought to the Kirti Nagar police station.
