The Income Tax Department on Sunday searched at least 50 locations here and in Madhya Pradesh against people linked to State Chief Minister Kamal Nath on charges of alleged tax evasion, officials said.

A team of about 200 tax and police officers began the searches around 3 a.m. and some undisclosed cash was recovered, they said.

For the searches, the department had roped in Central Reserve Police Force personnel to keep a vigil.

The searches are linked to suspected movement of hawala money during the election season and tax evasion, they said.

Locations in Indore, Bhopal and Delhi (Green Park) were being raided and those being searched included Mr. Nath’s former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Pravin Kakkad, former adviser Rajendra Miglani and executives linked to his brother-in-law’s firm Moser Baer and his nephew Ratul Puri’s company, the officials said.

Both Mr. Kakkad and Mr. Miglani quit their posts just before the Lok Sabha election was declared. Mr. Kakkad’s family is associated with a number of businesses, including hospitality.

In Indore, a team from Delhi searched Mr. Kakkad’s residence at Vijay Nagar and other places associated with him, sources in the department said.

Searches were also conducted at Mr. Kakkad’s house in Bhopal’s Nadir Colony and a couple of other places in the State capital.

A Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh accused the BJP-led Centre of targeting Opposition leaders for “political vendetta”.

However, the BJP said thieves were now having a complaint against the ‘watchman’.
