Hurriyat faction chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest at Nigeen when he started for the party headquarters in Srinagar on Saturday.

“We were having a one-day Hurriyat workers’ session and it was barred. The Rajbagh office was also sealed. I am not allowed any space or scope for any political activity. So much for practising honest democracy, Governor sahab,” said the Mirwaiz.

A Hurriyat spokesman said senior leaders like Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone and Mukhtar Ahmed Waza were scheduled to meet at the party headquarters. “But before they could, all the lanes and by-lanes were sealed by police.”
