HJS demands withdrawal of ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’ from upcoming IFFI-Goa screenings

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), right-wing Hindu outfit, has demanded withdrawal of screening of the Marathi film ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’ from among the films to be screened at the upcoming International Film Festival of India 2014 (IFFI) in Goa.

It claimed it hurts the national sentiments of Indians and the religious sentiments of Hindus.

National spokesperson of HJS, Manoj V. Solanki has said that they have submitted a memorandum in this regard on Monday to Minster of Information and Broadcasting, IFFI Organisers and State-owned Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG).

Also in Maharashtra Akhil Baratiya Sant Samiti’s Mahamantri and founder member of Sree Varkari Prabhodan Mahasamiti Kirtankar Rameshwar Maharaj Shashtri has also appealed to ban the movie which is denigrating the faith of ‘Warakaris’, Mr. Solanki said here on Tuesday.

The memorandum says that ‘Ekadashi’ is the tithi (eleventh day of the lunar month of Hindu Calendar) which is related to Hindu God, Lord Vishnu. There are twenty four Ekadashi’s in a year and each with a particular spiritual significance. Film director has created another ‘Ekadashi’ by naming it as an ‘Elizabeth Ekadashi’, which is misleading and denigration of ‘Ekadashi’.

The memorandum has also objected to a poster of the film depicting Elizabeth standing on a brick which is akin to the incident of Bhagvan Vithal standing on the brick thrown by his devotee Pundalik and also shows Bhagvan Vithal on cycle .

It has also objected to a scene in the film where scientist Newton is called as ‘Sant’ (Saint) Newton.

“This will give a wrong information to the viewers who mainly are children as it is projected as a film for children and launched on Children’s Day. The name Elizabeth brings in mind, the image of British Queen Elizabeth and bitter memories of British rule in India, which is again showing lack of national pride and hurting national sentiments of Indians,” said the memorandum of HJS.
