The Assam Police on Sunday said Qamar-uz-Zaman, an alleged member of Hizbul Mujahideen arrested in Kanpur last week, had come home in the State for buying arms and recruiting people for the outfit.

Director-General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said three of Qamar’s associates detained since September 14 had revealed the Hizbul Mujahideen’s plans for tapping “radicalised” youth in certain pockets of Assam. The three are Omar Farooq, Shahnawaz Alam and Saidul Alam.

“From Farooq, our men got to know that Qamar-uz-Zaman visited Assam in August for recruitment of new cadres,” Mr. Saikia said.

Omar is said to have told the police that he had worked for Qamar for the money offered. Qamar’s trip, the police said, was also to purchase arms.
