Helping Congress to oust BJP: Ajmal

April 19, 2019 02:28 am | Updated 02:29 am IST - Guwahati

AIUDF president Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday said his party was helping the Congress in order to defeat the BJP.

“The Congress wanted to finish us off. But we have helped them with the goal of defeating the BJP,” Mr Ajmal said after casting his vote in Hojai under Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency in central Assam.

He represents the AIUDF from western Assam’s Dhubri parliamentary constituency, from where he is seeking re-election for the third straight term.

“People should cast their conscience vote and press the button against the BJP,” Mr Ajmal said, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be able to continue in power after the results on May 23.

The AIUDF fielded candidates in three constituencies, down from six in 2014. The party said it did not contest other seats to avoid “splitting the secular votes”.

The Congress, however, fielded strong candidates in the seats the AIUDF is contesting.
