Gujarat’s Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel on Thursday met Gujarat’s OBC Commission chairperson Justice Sugna Bhatt and demanded that Patidars in Gujarat be given quota benefits similar to what Maharashtra government had offered to Marathas in the state.

Mr Patel said that the commission should conduct a socio economic survey of the Patidar community and then recommend quota benefits to Patidars, who constituted approximately 15 % of State’s population and significant chunk of Patidars were considered affluent and land owning community.

“We have submitted our demand before the commission. The commission must order socioeconomic survey of the community,” Mr Patel said. He was accompanied by other leaders of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), which spearheads the quota agitation in Gujarat.

He said that the survey should be done in three months and subsequently, the government must announce quotas and pass a bill in the state assembly.

Mr Patel presented a detailed submission giving reasons for why Patidars should be given quota benefits and why the commission must conduct a comprehensive survey of the community. “We will hep the commission in survey exercise also,” he said after meeting the commission chairperson in the state capital.

After Maharashtra government announced quotas for Marathas, Mr Patel had immediately reiterated his demand for Patidars and even quipped that “If reservation beyond 50 % is not possible constitutionally in Gujarat, how is it possible in Maharashtra?" He added that both Maharashtra and Gujarat both were under BJP government.

So far, Gujarat government had maintained that quota beyond 50% was not feasible under the Constitution.

Watching the developments in the neighbouring Maharashtra, the Gujarat government so far had not made any comment except CM”s remark that the state had sought details from Maharashtra.

“We have asked for the survey reports and related data and details on the basis of which the Devendra Fadnavis government has taken this decision,” Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had said.
