Launching a broadside against the BJP-ruled Centre, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the Centre’s unbridled misuse of probe agencies to finish off the existence of non-BJP parties resembled the “contract killing” that was once rampant in Mumbai city.

In his weekly column Rokhthok in the Sena's mouthpiece Saamana, Mr. Raut, his party’s chief spokesperson, said the “contract killing” phenomenon has now been replaced by the Centre’s “government killing” wherein probe agencies had taken a ‘contract’ from the BJP government to destroy the leadership of other parties.

“Given the record-breaking series of raids being conducted by the Central probe agencies in Maharashtra, one is tempted to ask whether there is a rule of law or a rule of raids in the State?” he asked.

The Sena leader mounted a strong defence of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders who had recently been ‘targeted’ by the agencies. The Sena, the NCP and the Congress share power in Maharashtra.

“[NCP Minister] Nawab Malik’s son-in-law Sameer Khan was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) under the pretext of being mixed-up in a drug racket and was put in jail for eight months. Now the court has granted him bail observing that herbal tobacco and not drugs was found in Mr. Khan’s possession…Nawab Malik ought to file cases against these NCB officials. These Central agencies have been wantonly indulging in defaming the State’s leadership,” Mr. Raut said.

He censured the raids carried out by the Income-Tax department authorities against Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s sisters.

“Despite his sisters not being active in politics, I-T authorities barged into their homes and acted as if they were some kind of criminals…BJP leaders brazenly say more such raids are due on the Pawar family. It is all too evident on whose orders the agencies function. This massive ploy to frame the government’s leaders on false corruption charges is on to defame Maharashtra…but, the State will never bow before such underhand tactics,” Mr. Raut said.

The Sena leader said the CBI was repeatedly raiding the homes of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh instead of finding out the whereabouts of Param Bir Singh, former Mumbai Commissioner of Police who had accused Mr. Deshmukh of corruption with the help of some police officers.

Mr. Raut asked why details of the PM Cares Fund were not made public as it was not a government fund but a private one where crores of rupees were being collected in the Prime Minister’s name.
