Goa taxi operators intensify strike

Tourist taxi operators affiliated to north Goa and south Goa associations have continued their strike on Tuesday. in protest against lathi-charge on their members by the Goa police on Monday evening at Porvorim in north Goa.

The taxi operators are opposing the entry of Olacabs in the State. Vice president of North Goa Tourist Taxi Association Ravindra Vengurlekar told The Hindu on Tuesday that Chief Minister Manohar Parikkar has called the representatives of north and south Goa taxi owners' associations for talks on Wednesday to resolve their grievances including their opposition to Olacabs.

On Monday evening, the taxi strike was intensified and turned violent when a huge crowd of taxi operators gathered at Porvorim on national highway in north Goa blocking the highway.

Mr. Vengurlekar said that they have continued their strike in protest on Tuesday but have not blocked any vehicles ferrying tourists or people. He said more than 6000 tourist taxis are still off-roads across the State.
