A supporter of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) who had tried to immolate himself at Kalimpong on July 30, demanding a separate State of Gorkhaland, succumbed to his injuries in Darjeeling on Saturday.

The death of Mangal Singh Rajput is the first casualty after the party raised the Statehood demand afresh following the Centre’s nod for a separate State of Telangana.

“His sacrifice must not go waste and that is why we must continue our fight for Gorkhaland,” GJM president Bimal Gurung said in a statement describing the deceased as a “brave youth Morcha leader.”
