A 13-year-old girl was hospitalised after she suffered stab injuries in an alleged rape attempt by a youth in Alipurduar, police said on Monday.

A police officer said the girl suffered stab injuries on neck by accused Tapas Adhikary, who took her away to a secluded spot in Shamuktala locality of the district and allegedly tried to rape her early on Monday.

As the girl tried to resist his actions, Adhikary stabbed her with a knife and escaped, the officer said quoting the FIR lodged by her family at Shamuktala police station.

The girl was initially taken to the local health centre but later shifted to Alipurduar Hospital where her condition was stated to be critical, the officer said.

Police are on the lookout of the accused, the officer added.
