Over 1,000 kg. of ganja worth ₹1 crore was seized by the police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district on Saturday night while it was being smuggled to Chhattisgarh by couriers travelling on foot.

According to police sources, security personnel in the Orkel police station area came across a group of 40 people who were carrying large packets on slings.

Upon seeing the policemen, most people in the group escaped into the jungle leaving behind 66 large packets. Three of them were nabbed.

The accused were found to be transporting marijuana to adjoining Chhattisgarh on foot.

On April 8, a large quantity of marijuana was seized from a vehicle on which the smugglers had used a blue beacon to make it look like a police vehicle.

On August 10, 2017, marijuana weighing 1,500 kg was seized from an empty tanker on the outskirts of Malkangiri town while it was being smuggled to Chhattisgarh.

According to sources, illegal marijuana cultivation in remote pockets of Malkangiri district is financed by outsiders.
