FTII students to hold fest at Panaji

Students of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, will hold a parallel documentary festival on Tuesday and Wednesday at Panaji, where the 46th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is under way.

Wary of students’ protests, the authorities had decided against screening students’ films at the IFFI this year.

The documentary fest is a protest against the “victimisation” of FTII students and alumni who are on a protest at the IFFI, Prateek Vats, spokesperson of the FTII students, said here on Sunday.

The students had been on a strike for 139 days in protest against the appointment of actor and BJP man Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of its governing council.

Mr. Vats said two former students, Kesley Gonzalvez and Shubham Vardhan, were detained by the police for raising slogans at the IFFI inaugural and released the next day. The police slapped serious charges of assaulting officials on duty, trespass and impersonation on them, Mr. Vats said. Around 10 FTII students were on Sunday stopped by the police at one of the IFFI venues. They were let off after questioning.
