Fresh twist to Meerut rape case

August 09, 2014 02:54 am | Updated December 04, 2021 11:27 pm IST - LUCKNOW:

In a new twist to the Meerut case of alleged abduction, gang rape and religious conversion of a 20-year-old B.A. student of Sarawa village, police “revealed” that she was married to a boy of a neighbouring village.

Of the seven named in the two FIRs registered on July 31 and August 3, only five have been arrested with the main accused, who is alleged to have forced the girl to convert, still at large. The girl has been admitted to the Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad for “better health care.”

Meanwhile, the report of the Meerut case was sent to the Government of India on Friday.

State Home Secretary Kamal Saksena said on Friday the police could not gather specific leads about the conversion from the girl’s statement recorded under Section 164 of Cr.PC as she had denied appending her signature on the affidavit. The affidavit was purportedly made after the girl was taken to a madrasa for a night stay sometime in June, but was refused permission on the ground that “non-Muslim girls” were not allowed to stay.

Mr. Saksena said the girl, in her statement, had denied signing on the affidavit. Gul Sanawwar and Vakeel Ahmed, who had prepared the affidavit, were arrested on Wednesday while the third accused was absconding, the Home Secretary said.

According to police, the girl was supposedly married to one Kaleem of Uldhana village under the Kharkhaunda police station area in Meerut district. The whereabouts of Kaleem are not known.

The Home Secretary said the girl was taken to Muzaffarnagar where a medical test showed that she was one and a half months pregnant. Mr. Saksena said reports of Dr. Nawab and Dr. Sanaullah having performed the operation were not found to be true.

According to the U.P. official, the girl was taken to a Meerut hospital which recommended an advanced pregnancy test.

“On July 23, 2014, she was admitted to the Meerut Medical College where an operation was performed on her at 12.30 p.m. for a gynaecological problem. She was discharged at 10 a.m. on July 27, 2014,” Mr. Saksena said.

He said that in the Meerut Medical College records, the girl was shown as the “wife of Kaleem.”

“As per the police investigations, Kaleem was present at the time of the operation,” the Home Secretary said. Son of Adil, Kaleem belongs to Uldhana village in Kharkhaunda and the girl was in contact with him, Mr. Saksena said.
