Formation of a majority BJP government was the "final objective"

Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah on Tuesday made his party’s political objective known when he declared that it is his responsibility to ensure the formation of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.

On his maiden visit to Lucknow after assuming charge as party president, Mr. Shah, who is credited with BJP’s landslide victory in the State in this year’s Lok Sabha elections, slammed the Akhilesh Yadav government for the “misrule” in Uttar Pradesh.

He said the party’s victory in the U.P. Assembly polls and the formation of a majority BJP government was the “final objective [ antim lakshya] .

“Instead of respecting the people’s verdict [in the Lok Sabha polls], the Akhilesh Yadav government and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh were waging a fight [ sangharsh] against them,” Mr. Shah said at a divisional-level party office-bearers meeting here on Tuesday.

Assembly elections in the State are due in 2017, but prior that the 12 Assembly by-polls are scheduled to be held on September 13. All the 12 seats were held by the BJP and the by-elections have been necessitated by the resignations of the sitting MLAs following their election to the Lok Sabha.

In a frontal attack on the Samajwadi Party government, Mr. Shah blamed it for failing to maintain law and order. The BJP president accused the regime of pursuing vote-bank politics and alleged that one-sided action was being taken. He alleged that the law and order problems were on account of the appeasement policies and vote-bank politics of the present government.

Mr. Shah said it was on account of vote-bank politics that the police have been compelled to take one-sided action. Referring to the communal violence in Saharanpur and the report of the inquiry panel constituted by the Chief Minister, Mr. Shah blamed Mr. Mulayam Singh for shielding the State Government and constituting the probe panel of his own party.

Earlier, addressing party workers and leaders upon his arrival at the BJP headquarters, Mr. Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India can only be achieved when there is a BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.
