June 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - Guwahati:

The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improving with little over 15,000 people reeling under the water on Saturday in more than 70 villages across the State, down from the 30,000 persons affected yesterday.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority said in its daily flood report that more than 15,300 people are affected as of now in 72 villages across Barpeta, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Morigaon and Lakhimpur districts.

Till yesterday, more than 30,000 people were affected in 121 villages under seven districts across the State.

Barpeta district had the most persons hit by the flood at 10,000, followed by Morigaon with nearly 4,000 people, the ASDMA said.

Authorities are running three relief camps in Tinsukia, where a total of 198 persons are sheltered at this moment, it added.

Over 1,800 hectares of crop areas are under water currently, the report mentioned.

The death toll in the first wave of flood in Assam remained at three — one each in Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur and Baksa districts.

At present, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger marks at Nematighat in Jorhat and Dhubri town, while its tributary Jia Bharali was swollen at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur, the ASDMA said. - PTI
