HC directs election panel, Bengal govt.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the State Election Commission and the West Bengal government to disclose the measures they propose to take for the protection of polling personnel during the panchayat elections on May 14.

A group of employees, under the banner Sarkari Karmachari Parishad Paschim Banga, had filed a public interest litigation plea before the Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya and Justice Arijit Banerjee.

Express apprehension

The petitioners said that while they are assigned polling booths during the election period, sufficient arrangement is not made for their protection and security.

The court asked the SEC and the State government to file reports before May 4, when the matter will come up for hearing again.

Additional forces

Speaking to journalists later in the day, Director General of Police Surajit Purakayastha said that arrangements would be made to provide armed policemen at every polling booth. “We are making adequate arrangements for security but to provide back up we are in talks with other States for additional forces,” Mr. Purakaystha said.

In another development, the Opposition parties have approached the High Court alleging that the State Election Commission had violated the court’s order directing it to hold meaningful consultation with all stakeholders before deciding on the day of polling.
