Police in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh have launched a probe after the car of a judge who was travelling from Prayagraj to Fatehpur was hit by another vehicle from behind.

In his police complaint, Mohammad Ahmad Khan, ADJ (POCSO) Fatehpur, said that while he was serving in Bareilly as judge in December 2020, he had received a death threat from a youth after he had denied bail in a case.

Kaushambi Police on Friday said the judge was travelling from Prayagraj to Fatehpur on July 29 when a car (a multi-purpose vehicle) hit his vehicle from behind near Kokhraj police station. The judge's car was damaged but he, the driver and his gunman did not receive any injuries and used the same car to complete the journey.

ADG Prayagraj Prem Prakash described the incident as an accident, which happened when the car was trying to overtake the judge's vehicle. So far, nothing linking the incident to an attempt to murder has come to light, he said.

However, an FIR was lodged and further action is being taken, the officer added.

The driver of the vehicle was detained. "The two sides also stopped and even discussed about paying compensation but when there was no agreement he (the judge) submitted an application to register an FIR under 307 (IPC section for attempt to murder)," Mr. Prakash said.
