Fast-track court for Badaun rape case

More incidents of attacks on women put Akhilesh Yadav on the defensive

As political pressure mounted on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav over the >rape and murder of two cousins in Badaun, forcing his government to >dismiss two policemen and promise a fast-track court to try the case, more horror stories surfaced from other parts of the State.

A 17-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by four persons in the Sarai Meer area in Azamgarh district on Thursday night, while another rape victim’s mother cried for justice from a hospital bed in Etawah, the home district of Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh.

State Inspector-General (Special Task Force) Ashish Gupta said four persons had been named in the FIR in the Azamgarh gang-rape case and >one accused had been arrested. No headway, however, has been made in the Etawah rape case, reported on May 12, even five days after the mother of the victim was beaten up and stripped by relatives of the accused when she refused to withdraw her complaint.

Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati demanded President’s rule to protect the State from “jungle raj.”

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will visit Badaun on Saturday and meet the family members of the two gang-rape victims.
