Even as the labourers (mazdoors) and workers were given credit for the development, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav on Friday said the people of the State should be made aware of the welfare schemes launched by his government.

Mr. Yadav was Speaking at a function here to mark the launch of two welfare schemes and a website of the Labour Department on the occasion of International Labour Day, or the May Day, on Friday. Mr. Yadav said it is was “our” duty to apprise the people about the welfare measures, especially the work being done for the benefit of the labourers. He exhorted Samajwadi Party workers to spread awareness about of the welfare programmes. adding that it would help “counter the false propaganda”. Mr. Yadav said

At a time when moves in the Samajwadi Party are afoot to project the Chief Minister as the general who will lead the charge in the 2017 Assembly elections, the woeful lack of awareness among the people about the programmes, especially for the poor, appears to be a worrisome factor. A strong section in the party felt that the benefits are not percolating down to the actual beneficiaries, who, at the same time, were not aware of the measures. This fact was borne out by the Chief Minister himself. Referring to his Banda visit on Thursday where he distributed compensation cheques to families of 14 farmers, who lost their lives in the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorm, Mr. Yadav said the farmers were getting benefits from the accident and crop insurance schemes. “But, when asked about the programmes of the Samajwadi Party government they said they knew nothing about the schemes,” he said. Mr. Yadav said at the function held at his 5, Kalidas Marg residence.

Mr. Yadav said it is “our” duty to apprise the people about the welfare measures, especially the work being done for the benefit of the labourers.
