A special CBI court in Ranchi awarded five-year jail term on Friday to former Bihar Minister Mohd. Ilyas Hussain and four others in the 22-year-old bitumen scam case.

The CBI court of Anil Kumar Mishra had reserved orders after hearing was completed in the case on February 19.

“Contractor D.N. Singh was awarded seven years imprisonment in the case... the court also slapped a fine of ₹20 lakh on Mr. Hussain and the contractor,” lawyer Arvind Singh told local journalists in Ranchi.

Mr. Hussain was Minister for Road Construction when Lalu Prasad was Chief Minister of the State. The RJD legislator from Dehri in Rohtas district of Bihar lost membership of the State Assembly after he was convicted in the scam by the CBI court.

The ₹1.57 crore bitumen scam had surfaced in 1997. The Patna High Court handed over the case to the CBI.
