Drug trafficking: Manipur police arrest two

Police on Tuesday arrested two personnel of 8 Manipur Rifles along with drugs worth at least Rs 15 crore in the international market. The arrested personnel have been identified as Onial Haokip and Lulun Haokip, jamadar and rifleman respectively of 8 Manipur Rifles located in Chandel district. Two other tribal women drug traffickers were also arrested along with them. One driver was also detained.

Police sources said that there is intelligence report that some personnel of state force are involved in drug trafficking. Policemen of Thoubal district laid traps at Ushoipokpi on Tuesday evening. One jeep and one car carrying these traffickers were going from Imphal towards Moreh, the border town. On checking, police found prescription drugs for smuggling out to Myanmar. These prescription drugs are used in manufacturing more powerful and addictive drugs by adding some other substances and then smuggled back to Manipur for selling in the North Eastern states at prohibitive prices.

The arrested persons who were produced in the court on Wednesday were remanded to police custody for further investigation. On February 24 police had arrested Colonel Ajay Choudhury of the Indian army along with some accomplices in this district with prescription drugs worth over Rs 30 crore.
