Dissident MLAs stake claim to form govt. in Nagaland

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - Guwahati:

A six-member delegation of dissident legislators of the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) in Nagaland called on Governor P.B. Acharya on Wednesday evening and conveyed to him that they had lost confidence in the leadership of Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang.

They also staked the claim for formation of a new NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) government in the State.

Spokesman of the dissident NPF legislators and former Home Minister Imkong L. Imchen told The Hindu that they had impressed upon the Governor that their leader Mr. G. Kaitu Aye should be allowed to form a new government as Mr Zeliang had already lost the support of majority of the NPF and DAN legislators. The DAN consists of NPF, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Janata Dal (United), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and eight Independent legislators.

“We have conveyed to the Governor that we have the support of 23 of the total 38 NPF legislators. Besides, we have also submitted the letter of support from the four BJP legislators and few Independents. The Governor assured us to look into our demands,” said Mr Imchen.
