After the Aam Aadmi Party approached the Punjab Assembly Speaker, seeking disqualification of rebel leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira as MLA, the Shiromani Akali Dal has demanded disqualification of legislator Baldev Singh as well as he has quit the party.

“The breakaway AAP legislature group was fooling the people by enjoying all facilities as AAP legislators and that’s not just Sukhpal Khaira but Baldev Singh as well. Those who had submitted their resignations from the AAP, should be disqualified as members of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha immediately,” said former Minister and Akali Dal spokesperson Daljit Singh Cheema in a statement.

Tenth Schedule

Mr. Cheema said as per the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution any legislative member who voluntarily gives up membership of the political party he represents shall be disqualified from being a member of the legislative body.

“As per Articles 102 (2) and 191 (2) of the Tenth Schedule giving up the primary membership of a political party by a legislative member amounted to defection,” he said.

“Both legislators are drawing salaries and enjoying various facilities, including staff and personal security personnel, on account of their being AAP legislators,” he added.

AAP leaders, led by Leader of the Opposition Harpal Cheema had on Wednesday met Speaker Rana K.P. Singh and demanded Sukhlapl Khaira’s disqualification.
