Disqualify 4 BJP MLAs in Haryana, says plea

Petitioner cites issue of AAP MLAs

A petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday, seeking to disqualify four legislators of the Bharatiya Janta Party from the Assembly who were appointed as chief parliamentary secretaries in the Haryana government. This comes a day after President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the recommendation of the Election Commission to disqualify 20 MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi for holding offices of profit.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had last year set aside the appointment of the four MLAs — Shyam Singh Rana, Kamal Gupta, Bakshish Singh Virk and Seema Trikha — as chief parliamentary secretaries in the Haryana government. The MLAs later resigned from their position.

The petitioner, J.S. Bhatti, demanded disqualification of the four BJP MLAs on the lines of the disqualification of the AAP MLAs in Delhi.

Reacting on the issue, Haryana Chief Minister Mahohar Lal Khattar said the situation in the Haryana was different from that in Delhi.

“There was no such law in Delhi. We already have a law in place, but the Court said this is not correct so we have removed them [MLAs],” he said.
