Gujarat and Maharashtra received heavy showers on Tuesday afternoon as a “deep depression” over the Arabian Sea crossed the coast at Diu and is now tipped to help the progress of monsoon in northern India.
According to the Met department, the deep depression will bring in more moisture and hence drive the advancement of monsoon in North India.
“The deep depression crossed Diu between 2.30 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. It now lies over Saurashtra, 65-km south-southeast of Amreli. It is moving east-northeastwards. The deep depression will bring good rainfall in Gujarat, Rajasthan, parts of Madhya Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh,” said Mritunjay Mohapatra, scientist in-charge of Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department.
The deep depression brought good rainfall to Gujarat and the northern coast of Maharashtra, including its capital Mumbai, which was brought to a standstill last week by torrential showers.
“There is already a Western Disturbance over North Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. To add to it, the deep depression will bring in more moisture.
This will help in advancement of monsoon in North India. We have already said that monsoon is expected in next 2-3 days,” Mr. Mohapatra added.
According to Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, the next three days are expected to be packed with heavy pre-monsoon rain in Delhi and adjoining areas. At present, the Southwest Monsoon is moving at a fast pace and is likely to cover northern India in the coming few days.
IMD said that the Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to pass through Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Rajgarh, Damoh, Sidhi, Patna and Raxaul.
“Southwest Monsoon has been vigorous over western Madhya Pradesh and active over the Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh,” IMD said.
