Dalit groups protest outside American consulate in Mumbai

We expect an unconditional apology from the U.S. government: Devyani’s father

Dalit organisations on Tuesday held demonstrations outside the American consulate here against the arrest and alleged humiliation to Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade in the U.S.

Ms. Khobragade’s father, former IAS officer Uttam Khobragade, briefly participated in the demonstration. He appealed to the protesters to maintain restrain after which the protest was called off.

“The Indian government has taken the matter extremely seriously and has denied all the allegations levelled against her (Ms. Khobragade). The matter is currently at the diplomatic level and hence I have requested the protesters to call off the demonstration at present,” Mr. Khobragade told The Hindu .

“She was arrested despite having diplomatic immunity. We expect an unconditional apology from the U.S. government and will continue our protests till we succeed,” he said.

Earlier, an organisation called Dalit Cobra protested outside the American consulate also demanding an unconditional apology from the U.S. government.
