Curfew was imposed in Malpura town of Rajasthan’s Tonk district on Friday after escalation of tension over a clash between local residents and kanwariyas on Thursday, when the latter allegedly played loud music and raised inflammatory slogans while passing through a Muslim locality.

Kanwariyas were marching in a procession after collecting water from the nearby Bisalpur dam when the clash took place. Over 15 persons were injured in the violence and prohibitory orders were imposed in the town.

The situation worsened on Friday when a huge crowd of people holding a protest demonstration alleged that the religious procession was attacked and demanded the arrest of the accused. Clashes with the police were reported at several places in Malpura.
