A hardcore criminal and bank dacoit, Babu Nayak, escaped from the Bhanjanagar sub-jail in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday afternoon.

Bhanajanagar SDPO Utkal Keshari Dash said Nayak used a rope to cross over the boundary wall on the backside of the sub-jail. “We suspect some outsiders were involved in this escape as the rope was thrown from outside the premises,” he added.

The police have started vehicle checks around Bhanjanagar to track down the escaped criminal.

According to police records, Nayak was the mastermind of the dacoity at Manitara branch of Utkal Grameen Bank under Buguda police station in Gnajam district on May 24, 2017. A group of six miscreants led by him had looted mortaged gold ornaments and ₹4 lakh cash from the bank. Nayak was also involved in several dacoities and robberies in Ganjam, Khurda and Nayagarh districts.
