Crackdown on liquor parties in Gujarat ahead of new year celebrations

Gujarat police on Thursday launched a state-wide crackdown on liquor parties during New Year celebrations in the State.

The State police chief has asked all district SPs and range IGs to ensure no liquor was bootlegged in their respective areas. According to a senior police official, this instruction came from Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

Police have also deployed special squads at border check posts from where liquor is brought into Gujarat, a state with stringent prohibition laws.

In Gujarat, liquor is normally brought in from Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the three states with which Gujarat shares a border, and union territories of Daman in South Gujarat and Diu in the Saurashtra region.

In cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, police raided private farm houses. In Ahmedabad, a police team raided a private bungalow and arrested six people who were allegedly drinking.

Vadodara Police commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot issued a notification warning the city dwellers to refrain from wearing “revealing clothes” during the new year celebrations.

“Indecent behaviour, vulgar postures and show of skin will not be allowed during parties or in public,” Mr. Gehlot told media persons in Vadodara.
