In a suspected case of honour killing, the nude bodies of a young couple were found stuffed in separate steel trunks outside Tau Devi Lal Park on National Highway No 1 in the Murthal area of Sonepat district of Haryana on Monday morning.

Both the victims, who are yet to be identified, appeared to be in their late 20s. Since the woman was found wearing a chuda (bangles customarily worn by newly weds) along with ordinary bangles, the police are prima facie treating it as a case of honour killing.

The two trunks were discovered by morning walkers. Since both the boxes were locked and new, the visitors informed the local guard and the police.

Police personnel opened the trunks in the presence of the forensic team. The man’s legs had been chopped off and placed with the torso in one trunk, while the woman was found with injury marks in the other.

A post-mortem examination was conducted later in the day at the Civil Hospital in Sonepat. Praveen Kumar, Investigating officer, said nothing had been found in the vicinity of the bodies to establish their identity.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar said since the area is close to both the Uttar Pradesh and Delhi borders, the police of the neighbouring States have also been approached to identify the victims.
