: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police Narasingha Pani was arrested by vigilance officials while he was accepting a bribe in the Tumba outpost under the Jarada police station in Ganjam district of Odisha on Tuesday.
As per Superintendent of Police (SP) of Berhampur vigilance division, Manoranjan Panda, the arrested police ASI had demanded Rs. 50,000 as bribe from the complainant Laxmikant Bisoyi to drop legal action against his brother, father in law.
On the night of January 17, Laxmikant had paid Rs. 40,000 to Pani but had informed the vigilance department about it.
Panda had promised the ASI to pay the rest of the bribe money on Tuesday. Accordingly, the vigilance sleuths had planned to catch the ASI red-handed with phenolphthalein-marked currency notes. At around 1 p.m., the complainant had reached the Tumba police outpost with the marked currency notes and handed them over to Pani. The hiding vigilance officials had immediately rounded up the erring police officer and arrested him.
