Congress' Pune candidate says leaders should introspect

Congress' Pune Lok Sabha candidate Vishwajeet Kadam, who lost to BJP's Anil Shirole, stated on Sunday that his party's leaders should introspect on its debacle. Mr. Shirole won with a massive margin of over 3.1 lakh votes, a first in the bastion of Pune.

Amidst the demand within the Congress party for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's resignation, Mr. Kadam too hinted at the need for Mr. Chavan to take responsibility. "All senior leaders should introspect, and see what went wrong in this election," he told reporters on Sunday. Mr. Kadam was chosen over Commonwealth Games (CWG) scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi, a three time MP from Pune.

Earlier, addressing party workers, Congress city unit vice-president Deepak Mankar demanded Mr. Chavan's resignation. "The Chief Minister should accept moral responsibility of the loss in Maharashtra and step down," he said in a public meeting.
