Accusing the ruling Congress government in Punjab of betraying the people, especially farmers, by going back on its election promises, the Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday announced that it will ‘gherao’ the State Assembly on March 20, when the budget session begins, in protest.

‘Farmers hit hard’

“We will protest because the Congress government has betrayed the people of Punjab by not fulfilling its poll promises. Farmers, peasants and the poorer sections of society have been hit the most,” said SAD senior vice-president Daljeet Singh Cheema.

Mr. Cheema said the decision was taken by the party’s core committee and thousands of party workers accompanied by senior leaders would reach Chandigarh on protest day.
